The McGill Family Medicine Interest Group

FaMSIG is a diverse group of students that promotes all of the many options family medicine offers as a career and provides a forum for the discussion of topics pertinent to family medicine.

The year started out with a chance-to-meet-second-year-family-medicine-residents night (with free beer and pizza!). It took place at Thomson House on September 1, 2011 where residents discussed why they chose family med.

Coming up is a day trip on October 1, 2011 with the Wilderness Medicine club to a rural site. There we’ll visit a hospital where family physicians do it all, and we’ll also enjoy some outdoor activities at the same time.

Another great event: We’re encouraging every McGill medical student to attend is the national Family Medicine Forum which serendipitously takes place in Montreal this year at the Palais des Congrès. It’s happening November 3-5, 2011 and IT’S FREE FOR STUDENTS. Plus we’ve formed a McGill team for the Walk for the Docs of Tomorrow which will take place that same weekend. This is a way for the family medicine interest groups from across Canada to raise funds for med student scholarships. The group to raise the most money will receive $1,000 for their FaMSIG, and we are lucky to have lots of local physicians supporting us and participating themselves. With your help, we stand a very good chance of winning on our own turf, so join or sponsor us!

Other events to look out for include a dinner for students with residents and family docs to answer your questions. Of course, we’ll also be having lunchtime talks and regular meetings during which it is very easy to get involved with this dynamic club. If you are interested in knowing more about our club and events or writing an article for Premiere Ligne, send us a message at mcgill.famsig@gmail.com, join us on facebook or come out to one of our meetings. We’re looking forward to seeing you soon!

"The plus in practicing in a rural area is people, know you, you live amongst your patients. Some patients, I've known for so many years and, you know, it's like old friends... You see lives change. I feel that what I do is really important, life has to vibrate.
